How quickly can I get an appointment?
It depends. I am usually booked well in advance, but depending on the time of year, some new clients can be seen within 7 to 14 days, sometimes sooner! However, if you are experiencing a mental health emergency, call 911 or the PermiaCare hotline at 1-844-420-3964 immediately.
Should I call or email for an appointment?
Whatever is easiest for you. I am usually with clients or away from my desk, so please leave a voicemail if you call. (For your protection, if you do not leave a voicemail, I will not return your call.)
If you prefer email, you can email me directly at megan@meganmedinacounseling.com. (If you do not receive a response within 24-48 hours, check your junk mail folder or try calling instead. Some email filters block unknown email addresses.)
What’s the first session like? I’m nervous.
The first session is a getting-to-know-you session where we will review paperwork, policies, and discuss your primary concerns. Your job in the first session is to make sure you feel comfortable talking to me– and if you don’t, I will be happy to provide referrals to someone who might better fit your needs.
How long are sessions?
45 minutes for individuals, families, and couples, and 90 minute sessions are available for those who would like more in-depth work. In some cases, 4-hr intensive sessions for trauma processing are available on the weekends.
How often do we meet?
It depends on the nature of your concern, your goals, and what is convenient and affordable for you. It’s usually recommended to start out weekly, and most of my clients quickly transition to meeting every other week. Once you feel progress in your treatment, monthly or quarterly sessions are an option for goal maintenance. We’ll figure out what’s best for you.
How long is this going to take?
It depends on the nature of your mental health concerns and how quickly you work toward your goals. On average, many clients find themselves ready to “graduate” from counseling within 6-12 sessions, while some time-dependent issues, like grief, trauma, and affair recovery often take 12 months or more (in order to support you past the difficult “anniversary” date). Everyone is different, but the goal is to help you reach emotional independence.
For The Gottman Method couples counseling, the first four sessions involve in-depth interviews, assessment, and treatment planning before we proceed with regular sessions. This is a standard part of the Gottman process and can be an incredibly insightful and valuable process that many couples enjoy.
